The Relationship Between Self-discrepancy and Social Anxiety in College Students : Mediating Effect of the Fear of Positive / Negative Evaluation

The current study investigated the relationship between self-discrepancy and social anxiety and mediating effects of fear of positive/negative evaluation in college students. In particular, this study focused on the inconsistency between the actual self and the ought self imposed on oneself and the inconsistency between the actual self and the ought self that significant others expect. This study collected data of 300 university students through online questionnaire survey and the collected data were analyzed using Structural Equation. the result of the analysis are a follow. The self-discrepancy between the actual self and the ought self imposed on oneself was found to affect the social anxiety through a full mediation of fear of positive evaluation and fear of negative evaluation. The self-discrepancy between the actual self and the ought self imposed on significant others was found to affect the social anxiety through a full mediation of fear of negative evaluation. This study confirmed that the degree of correspondence between the actual self and the ought self has an influence on social anxiety, and that fear of positive evaluation as well as fear of negative evaluation are important variables in predicting social anxiety.
